Vision “It is felt that the ground for the realisation of the vision would fundamentally be based on the existing natural resources referring mainly to development of viable livestock activities including enhancement of the production and productivity, as well as the introduction of market oriented products for income generation”. "that farmers possess productive livestock, put the scientific management practices into use and tap the production potential to its optimum thereby making the country self sufficient in livestock products" Mission The Dzongkhag Livestock sector operates within the broad frameworks of the programmes like breed improvement, diary development, health coverage, fodder development, pig and poultry development, establishment of farmers’ groups, research and extension development, human resources and infrastructure development. The Livestock Sector is therefore guided by the following broad missions of the Department: • Sustainable development of arable agriculture, Livestock and forestry for the enhancement of self-sufficiency in food, fodder, fuel wood, construction timbers and other products. • To maintain self sufficiency in Livestock products by 90 % and reduce the import • To expand the Livestock farming in all the areas of horizon that are related to Livestock • The improvement of income, living and nutritional standards of the rural population. • Environmental conservation emphasizing an integrated crop/ livestock/ forestry systems development. Mandate 1. To provide support services like technical backstopping for inputs supplied to farmers. 2. To coordinate the supply of fodder seeds and planting materials, fertilizers, chemicals, breeding animals, medicines, instruments etc. 3. To coordinate the animal health services and controlling the activities of health service centres (viz. Geog centers and Veterinary Hospital). 4. To promote the farmers participation in the livestock development programmes. Functions The Dzongkhag Livestock responsible to: • Carry out the disease diagnosis • Coordinate and operate animal health services • Produce and supply breeding stock like bulls, poultry, piglets, stallions etc. • Supply fodder seed and coordinate related activities • Provide AI services for cattle • Monitor the end use of the inputs Strategies:
